If you lived with me, you know that I am collector of paint swatches. Boyfriend and I just finished a total revival of our kitchen and paint chips were spread all over our dinning room table. We would feel right at home with these placemats.

What a privileged wedding invitation designer I am to work with this magnificent bride. She is a friend of a best friend that passed along my name. From the start she was organized and made my job easy. She created a mood board in pinterest and pushed me along my way from the start. I had visions of this wedding and it is much more beautiful that I would have ever imagined.

Yesterday I got this notice in my inbox-

On Friday, September 23, the Denver and Front Range region will be participating in an emergency response exercise.

To avoid confusion or concern, we want to ensure our local associates are aware of the exercise details.

Exercises will include loud noises, simulated weapons, smoke, emergency vehicles and other audible/visible equipment from the hours of 5am – 4:30pm.

The exercises have been designed as a learning event for regional first responders to test their capabilities in a scenario that will involve a terrorist-driven catastrophic situation.

Weird email to get, right?
Immediately, my mind went to propaganda posters. Imagine your duties as a graphic designer in the 30's and 40's. The posters you would be expected to design, to uplift the general public to live and breathe red, white and blue.

Just out side my window, I expect to see smoke on the horizon obstructing my view of the Rockies. It is going to be a weird day. I can hear planes circling the area now.

On top of this exercise going on there is the satellite that is plummeting towards the earth.

I don't even know where to start. This experience was the most amazing thing I have ever done. I gathered a dozen of my closest friends and asked them to join me on a photoshoot in the Great Sand Dunes of Alamosa Colorado. Love-n-Joy photography picked my submission for a creative photos shoot. They shot away from sun rise until the summer sun rose over dunes. They got some amazing shots and captured the energy of my amazing friends. Thank you Love - n- Joy and my lovely friends for your endless support of my creative spirit. This was so much fun!

My F A V O R I T E band is in Denver tonight, playing at the Blue Bird. Hoots and Hellmouth is opening for The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and Austin Lucas & The Bold Party. Tickets are super cheap, only $15. They will be playing some tracks from their new album... like I Don't Mind Your Cussing.That is a little amount of money to pay for an evening of smiles and foot stomping.

I just returned to Denver, after meeting Fred for the first time. My brother's son, is uber cute. Sister-in-law and I took a total of over 1,000 images of this little guy during his happy moments of the day. He lasted about 45 minutes of nothing but giggles and smiles.

Summer Destinations Part 1

I few posts back I mentioned, that I got a new job. An awesome job, that has a great life/work balance ratio factored into its philosophy. They gave me 2+ weeks of lingering time between my jobs and recommended that I do some traveling or vacationing. After I gave my old job the 2 week+ notice, boyfriend and I traveled abroad for my first European adventure. After a week of high investigation of which part of the country was still safe to travel to, we landed on the island off of Italy. The culturally rich land of Sicily.

This adventure was amazing. Wine, fresh seafood, pasta, gelato, architecture, people, adventure, landscape, and history were a draw and ending up being the best parts if Italy. (Anthony Bourdain has a great show about Sicily, which we watched and secured our reasoning to travel to the island: Check it out here

All that patience came into play finally.
I GOT A NEW JOB! So, you can find me doing a happy dance!(see image above) I am leaving my old job in about 2 weeks, finishing up projects I have been itching to finish at the house, traveling with the boyfriend and then starting my new position in July.

My leave is bitter sweet. I love the creative staff in my old department including Sarah Fritzler, but I had hit a wall and there was no where for me to go. So.. time to move on and out! I am looking forward to change.

This spring I have a few designs coming through the pipeline. I have recently been doing a little freelance with LoyalTee. LoyalTee is a T-shirt collective featuring beloved local landmarks. They have been a joy to work with, and keep checking back for my other designs. There is another one right around the corner.

A little about Bonnie Brae Tavern

In the midst of the Great Depression and on the heels of Prohibition's repeal, Carl and Sue Dire dared to open a bar in south Denver at the corner of University and Ohio. The tavern was named for the adjacent neighborhood, Bonnie Brae — then a struggling housing development. While much has changed around the tavern, the tavern itself has changed little. The Bonnie Brae Tavern is still outfitted with teal vinyl booths and swiveling barstools, while its walls pay homage to its roots — both geographic and familial. For decades, Denverites have flocked to the tavern for pizza, comfort food, cold beer and a hearty welcome. Most notably, the tavern has stayed in the family; today Carl and Sue's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are at the helm.

Bayaud Puppy - 1 year 1 month

It has been a while since I have posted about Bayaud pup. He is a little over a year and we celebrated our birthdays with our favorite thing... WALK! Bayaud is still a monster. But he tries so hard and very apologetic when he gets in trouble. He is about 82 pounds and never misses a meal. Snoring has become apart of the falling asleep process and a new found sense of smell has his nose to the ground like a hound. He has developed the nick name Bay-odd, from a friend and it fits him well. He is an amazing, quirky dog and will be even more so with age.

Here is the most recent picture I took of him. He has grown good at posing for the camera. Happy 1 year puppy!

I am not sure who is out there, but.. hey... listen: This band is worth listening to!

The lead singer and I go back... all the way back to freshman dorm days at Arizona State. I was in for most nights and this quiet guy, Gabe was always there too, singing and playing his guitar on the front veranda into the wee hours of the night. While all the other freshly independent students were running a muck around campus, I found solitude and music with Gabe. Back then he was singing Dashboard Confessionals and Jimmy Eat World before they hit the top of the charts. He was probably out there to meet girls and I probably blew his cover most nights. But I would always sit with him and listen and try to hum along.

Gabe and I spent a lot of time together and I grew very fond of his singing style. I watched him move from band to band and all of them had a special vibe. Maybe it was Gabe, maybe it was the deep love of music he has, or possibly I am just biased. But anyways... he is with another band called Bears of Manitou. They are great. If you are in Phoenix go see them play live. They have a real good feeling behind their music.

Oh, and maybe another great part of the band is the lead singer, whose voice hits straight to your heart. or maybe the vivacious drummer Brian.. whom I also knew from school. or maybe it is the bass player that takes up an important part of the stage that really takes my heart.

ADCD Paper Fashion Show- March 24

I mentioned the ADCD Paper Fashion show with things to do in Denver this month. Tickets are $25 and most of the proceeds go to a good cause. (helping with the arts).

Here's what is all about:
Designers create fashions from paper donated by xpedx®. These fashions are showcased at our grand runway show, and voted on by a panel of judges. Designs will also be shown publicly during "Create Denver" art week in early 2011. The event includes fabulously catered appetizers and a fully stocked cash bar.

Part of the proceeds and auctioned fashion designs from the Paper Fashion Show in part benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA)", a local community organization that provides after-school arts programs for at-risk youth. Kids participate in projects that help build self-esteem and increase connection to the community.

Mariachi El Bronx

The other night I went to the CD release show for DeVotchKa's new album. It was held at the Fillmore, located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver. The show was fabulous, the crowd was interesting, and the side-show performers were fascinating. But what made the night even more special was the opening band: Mariachi El Bronx.

Mariachi El Bronx is an alter ego for a punk band out of LA called The Bronx. The are a full mariachi band, in mariachi garb, singing in mariachi style. It is a divergence from the band's usual hardcore punk and hard rock sound in favor of a mariachi style. To promote and perform the album the band adopted the alter ego persona "Mariachi El Bronx", and have performed under both identities concurrently.

Check them out. Both the punk band and the mariachi alter ego are stellar.

Side note: Mariachi El Bronx will be performing at Coachella this year. Saturday April 16th!!

What is Girls on the Run?
Girls on the Run Denver is a program educate and prepare girls (ages 8-13) for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The Girls on the Run objective is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities. The goal is fewer adolescent pregnancies and eating disorders, less depression and suicide attempts, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.

Sounds like something good for little girls struggling to me.

Solvang with Love

Jenna and Mike got married this summer at Firestone Winery, in Solvang, CA. Jenna and I met as freshman roommates at Arizona State and are soul friends forever... I was thrilled when she asked me to stand in her wedding. The atmosphere in Solvang was everything that a bride could dream of. A perfect wedding. The atmosphere was full of love and excitment. Boyfriend and I had a wonderful get away, while I was doing the bridal preparations, boyfriend was making friends with the wine sellers.
